Basics

How do you get to a walk?

It doesn't matter if you drive or not, the majority of walks start from the Car Park at Pontcanna Fields. Address: Fields Park Rd, Riverside, Cardiff CF11 9LB. This is close to the City Centre and public transport. We operate a car-sharing scheme from the meeting point to the walk to keep costs down and help to reduce our impact on the environment.

Do you allow dogs on a walk?

Dogs are allowed on a walk at the discretion of the walk leader. Some walks are simply not suitable for dogs so you should contact the walk leader before bringing a dog on any walk.

Car sharing Scheme

Tiger Bay Ramblers encourages car sharing and walkers often meet at the Car Park at the end of Fields Park Road, Pontcanna, Cardiff. Drivers often appreciate it when a voluntary contribution is made by passengers. As a guide, 20p per mile per passenger is considered an amount which reasonably covers the costs incurred by the driver.

Information for Walk Leaders

Whether you are an existing leader or considering becoming one, this section of the website is here to provide you with information.

Tiger Bay Ramblers is dependent on its volunteer walk leaders, who provide many varied and well planned walks throughout the year. Although we have many existing leaders we are always looking for more to ensure the continued success of the group.

To lead a walk for the group, it is essential that you are a member of the group and that your membership of the Ramblers' Association has not expired! This is to ensure that the walking party is covered by insurance.

All aspects of walks are managed by the walks planning officer. Any questions about becoming a walk leader or leading a walk should be directed to him/her.

Walk Leader's Checklist

Please download the walk leader's checklist for a simple to follow guide on what should be carried out and when before and during leading a walk.

Incident Report Form

The Ramblers takes out insurance to cover our activities such as committee meetings, publicity events and walks. However it is most relevant to led walks.

The cover this year contains some changes, so please ensure you read the guidance notes in full to ensure you have an understanding of the changes. Read the 2009/2010 guidance notes here.

If you have need to complete an Incident Report form, please download it from the following link:-

Mountain Safety Policy

While Tiger Bay Ramblers encourages people of all abilities to participate in our walks, common sense dictates that we have certain requirements to ensure everyone's health & safety. For winter walks on exposed or mountainous regions, these are mandatory (and strongly advised during the rest of the year).

If you don't have these basic items or are a new or inexperienced walker, you will not be permitted on the walk: -

If in any doubt, Contact the walk leader or Walks Planning Officer in advance to avoid disappointment. The walk may be subject to change, cancellation or postponement at little or no notice.

The walk leader may check that you are carrying the gear listed above and are not an inexperienced walker. They have the right to decline to take you on the walk if all the requirements stated are not met. The walk leader may curtail the walk if the weather conditions deteriorate. The walk leader's decision is final.

In the event of weather conditions deteriorating to the point where it is no longer safe to continue the walk the party will be led to a lower, safer altitude as soon as it is reasonable, practical and safe to do so.

There are other suitable walks on our programme for new or inexperienced walkers. These do not have such stringent requirements for clothing and are much more suitable if you fall into this category.
