Chepstow & Tintern: The Wye Valley's Greatest Hits - 19 Feb 2012

Featuring Chepstow Castle, Wintour's Leap, the Devil's Pulpit, Tintern Abbey and much much more!

Starting at Chepstow's medieval castle, we cross the ancient bridge across the border into England and follow the Offa's Dyke Path up the western side of the valley, affording spectacular views. We descend into Tintern where we cross back into Wales and take in the splendour of the ruined 12th century Cistercian abbey, returning to Chepstow by way of the Wye Valley Walk.

This is the same walk as I did last year. It's on the strenuous side of moderate, if only because it is quite a long walk. While the highest part of the walk is 240m there are a couple of steep-ish climbs.

Rogerstone - Machen Mountain - 22 Feb 2012

Who's up for an evening stroll up Machen Mountain? Leaving Rogerstone train station at 19:00 means you can get train up should you wish (20minutes, one stop from Cardiff leaving 18:35) or drive. There's plenty of parking. Rogerstone is just north of Newport, about 20minutes drive from Cardiff.

The walk is mainly through the forest, and once at the top there are good views over Cardiff, Newport and Caerphilly. If it's really clear you can see the other side of the Severn. Of course if it's raining/cloudy the views will be less (i.e. about 20 yards), but it's a nice walk up and majority of it is sheltered.

Will take between 2 and 2.5 hours to complete the walk, and there should be time for a quick pint in the pub before the 22:10 train back into Cardiff for those that chose the train.

Oh - fairly obvious - but bring a torch!

Following the overwhelming success of TBRs inaugural St Davids Day Walk last year, Delyth and Judith will once more be leading us on a Welsh themed bi-lingual walk. As last year, everyone will be invited to bring or wear something celebrating all things Welsh. Reports of a quiz with prizes are as yet unconfirmed, but visit the website again nearer the time for details of what’s planned.

Please note the Walk Meeting Point is in Cardiff Bay and not the normal meeting point at Pontcanna Fields.

We will start from the tall Silver Water Fountain outside the Wales Millenium Centre in Roald Dahl Plaza, Cardiff Bay. We will walk across the Barrage and then climb up the hill to St. Augustine’s Church for views back across the Bay and Cardiff city. From here we will continue through parks and gardens down to Penarth sea front (a detour along the pier, or across the beach is optional!) along the sea front and up the Cliff Walk to Cioni’s Café Bar and Pizzeria where we will stop for lunch/ a break (either bring a packed lunch to eat outside, or buy from the café).

On our return journey we will walk through cliff top gardens before retracing our steps back across the Barrage to the Bay.

The walk will be ‘easy’, with a gentle pace a couple of short climbs, and takes place on good paths and foot paths.

Note on Parking: those intending to drive to the start point are reminded that free car parking is available in the Bay in the vicinity of the Norwegian Church, and at the Park and Ride facility at County Hall (CF10 4UW)

Explore the former mill town of Nailsworth before walking through gorgeous pastures, with the opportunity to visit Chavenage House (if it's open!) at around the halfway point.

Dinas Powys - Cwm George Woods and the Twyncyn - 25 Mar 2012

An early spring walk around Dinas Powys woods (Cwm George), passing the site of an Iron Age Settlement and taking in the Twycyn; with its spectacular views of the Bristol Channel.

The walk will finish about 2pmish in the afternoon, so a packed lunch is optional as we will finish in the Star which serves food.

However, I would strongly recommend that if you decide not to bring lunch to bring at least some snacks.

Parts of the route may be muddy so I would recommend wearing walking boots/wellies and gaiters.

Cost per car is about £5.

Roundtrip = 11 miles.

Driving time = 20mins.

PLEASE NOTE THAT CLOCKS GO FORWARD IN THE EARLY HOURS OF SUNDAY 25th OF MARCH, hence a later start than normal to account for this.

Gelligaer Common and Rhymney Ridgeway - 08 Apr 2012

Starting from the car park at Cwm Darran Country Park, we will climb to the summit of Carn y Bugail - at 477m the highest point between the Taff and Rhymney rivers - with its stone age round cairn and standing stone. From here, we will hopefully have good views of Merthyr and the Brecon Beacons to the north.

From Carn y Bugail, we will head southwards across Gelligaer Common past the sandstone quarry to the site of the 6th century Capel Gwladys, where we will join the Rhymney Valley Ridgeway path. From here we descend back down into the Darran Valley, crossing the Rhymney Bargoed river, and climbing back up the other side onto Cefn Brithdir ridge. Passing the ruins of Capel y Brithdir, we head northwards with the Rhymney valley below us to the east, before descending past Fochriw back to the Cwm Darran Country Park along a dismantled railway track.

The walk involves mixed terrain including open moorland, farmland and some roadside walking. Depending on the weather, it could be muddy and wet. Given that we will be crossing some farmland during lambing season, this walk is not suitable for dogs.

This walk is classed as strenuous due to its length. However, other than the two ascents out of the valley at the start and mid-way points described above, this is for the most part quite a flat walk. A good idea of the route and elevation can be found here (walk will vary slightly from one shown).

Moderate to strenuous circuit from Llanthony Priory to Cwmyoy via Llanthony Woods returning via Hatterall Hill and Offa's Dyke Path. Come prepared for all weathers. Stunning views if we're lucky, your reward for a couple of steep climbs.

Please note directions to start point as Sara won't be at Pontcanna: Find your way to get on the A4042 to Abergavenny. At the big roundabout outside Abergavenny take the A465 towards Hereford. Turn off at Llanvihangel Crucorney. Turn left just past The Skirrid Inn and follow the signs to Llanthony. Turn right into the grounds of the Priory and park in the car park. Parking may be limited so please car share where possible.

Join TBR and Ramblers Cymru over the weekend of 5-6 May 2012 when, along with the rest of Wales, we will be celebrating the official launch of the Wales Coast Path.

The Wales Coast Path will be a continuous path around the country, available for walkers throughout and cyclists and horseriders where practicable. It will be as near to the coast as legally and physically practicable, whilst fully taking into account the needs of health and safety, land management and conservation.

Llyn y Fan Fach - 17 Jun 2012

This is a spectacular but strenuous walk with a total ascent of 600m. We will be walking at a relaxed pace (the walk leader doesnt do speed) with plenty of rest stops to allow everyone to catch up. However, this is still a taxing walk and a reasonable level of fitness is required: an ascent of 600m is the equivalent to a bit more than twice the height of Garth Hill when walked from Taffs Well railway station (or 4 times the height of Garth Hill when walked from the Gwaelod y Garth pub). There are no toilets at the start of the walk (or anywhere along it), nor places to buy food. There is a farm about a mile from the carpark that serves tea and cake which we will visit at the end of the walk. The walk start point is tricky to describe (and find): a road atlas is essential and a satnav is a big help! Please contact the walk leader for details of the walk start point. This walk starts with a 2.5-mile uphill stretch across open access moorland (no paths) until we reach the summit Fan Brycheiniog. Our hard work will be rewarded by spectacular views over the western Brecon Beacons and two exquisite glacial lakes, Llyn y Fan Fach and Llyn y Fan Fawr. We will then make our way westwards along the rim of the Llyn y Fan Fach glacial valley, and then a steep descent to the lake itself. From there it is an easy downhill 2-mile walk along a farm road back to the carpark. This walk ascends to 800 metres and is therefore subject to the TBR Mountain Safety Policy. Even if it is sunny and hot when we start, the weather can change dramatically above 700m. Sturdy walking boots are essential, as are quick-drying leggings (walking trousers or running leggings, etc, not jeans). It is also essential to bring a waterproof jacket, a fleece, gloves, warm hat, lunch, snacks and at least 2 litres of water). Bring a cap/hat and suncream too.
